Summer Indoor Activities for Kids

Fun summer activities are a necessity when kids are at home and parents are looking for ways to keep them occupied without having them overrun the house. This can be difficult, particularly in southern climates, as the summer heat can make it difficult for them to entertain themselves outside. However, there are options that can be found in most areas. Some might cost a few dollars, but others are free. It is suggested to go for some free ones first.

Kids’ Summer Activities

Keeping the kids occupied in games can be a priority for many parents. Summer camp can be an option for children of all ages, but parents may want other options for indoor activities. For a moderate cost, there are a few activities that parents can do with their children that kids can do with their friends.

Movies – Although cable television and the computer make watching movies an activity that can be done at home, going to the movie theater can be a fun activity as well. Include popcorn and a soda and make it a real treat.

Museums – Local museums can be both fun and educational. Kids can learn about new cultural and historical interests. Some museums even include interactive exhibits designed especially for children.

Sports – By either watching or playing, kids can become involved in indoor sports activities at their local YMCA or gymnasium. Some of these establishments even offer summer camp activities that provide entertainment and exercise on a regular basis.

Free Activities for Kids

Sometimes keeping children entertained can be a bit expensive, especially if a family has more than one child. However, rather than spending a small fortune, parents can look for local options that offer kids’ entertainment for free.

Library – Joining the local library is free and easy. Many libraries provide weekly story time for young children and book club activities for older ones. Plus, children can continue to entertain themselves with the books they checkout and bring home.

Mall – Although the mall is usually a place where adults spend money, for children, it can be a place full of activity. There are lots of store parents can wander in and out of with their children, and some malls even have play areas specifically designed for younger kids.

Visiting – Joining forces with other parents is a great way to help each other out during the summer months. Taking turns hosting play dates means one afternoon with a full house, but several without.

Having Fun While Keeping Cool

Summer heat sometimes makes outdoor activities difficult for kids to enjoy. However, staying in the air-conditioned house can make for bored kids and harried parents. Taking advantage of indoor activities outside of the house – some designed for children’s entertainment and some that can be adapted to entertain – can keep everyone cool and happy.

Summer Outdoor Activities for Kids

Once school is out and summer has started, many parents begin looking for entertaining ideas to pass the time one of them can be sports betting, thanks to EURO 2020/2021. Outdoor summer activities for kids can range from water parks to a simple backyard sports game. Keep the child’s age and developmental level, as well as the weather conditions, in mind when planning this fun filled outside adventures.

Wave Pools and Water Parks for Kids

This is common and obvious. Strong swimmers may enjoy a day out at a nearby wave pool or water park. Parents should use common sense and caution when deciding whether or not a child is old enough to bring to either of this water filled places.

Very young children, and older kids who are not strong swimmers, should not be brought to wave pools. These, usually deep water, pools simulate ocean waves and may prove to be a swimming challenge to an inexperienced swimmer.

Wave pools may be privately or publicly run through sports organizations, municipalities, or even county parks. Additionally, many larger water parks and theme parks have a wave pool.

Although water parks may have slides and other features that attract the thrill seeking older child, many national chains and local amusements provide shallow wading pools and preschool type water playgrounds for younger children.

Water parks can be found across the U.S. in many different regions. Many national amusement park chains such as Six Flags offer large water attractions. Some water parks, such as Hershey Park, have an adjoining water attraction that is included in the price of admission.

Kids’ Summer Sports

Families looking for a budget friendly summer outdoor activity that gets the kids up and moving may want to try a sport. Whether children participate in an organized team venture or a backyard game, summer sports are a fun way to get some added exercise.

The parents can find team programs offered by schools, community centers, or organizations such as the YMCA. Summer sports may include baseball, t-ball, tennis, swimming, or soccer.

As an alternative to team sports or lessons, parents may want to consider organizing a backyard athletic event. Invite friends from school, neighborhood children, or family members over for an afternoon or evening of sporting fun. Try a game of kickball, soccer, flag football, or volleyball. There are more.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that parents be mindful of heat stress in children exercising (engaging in sports) outdoors in the summer. Limit the amount of time that the children spend actively engaging in movement to under fifteen minutes in the heat, make sure that all children are well hydrated before, during and after physical activity, have children wear light colored clothing and sunscreen, and avoid any outdoor activities in excessive heat.

Summer Crafts for Kids

Arts and crafts projects do not need to be an indoor activity. Take the art outside and try:

Sidewalk chalk murals.

Sketching with pencils and papers in nature.

Setting up an outdoor easel to paint.

Making water and mud art.

An outdoor natural materials craft.

Spend the summer trying outdoor activities. Weather permitting, kids can enjoy water parks, sports, or even crafts as they soak up the summer season.

The future of online gaming

Published

on

In the past few decades, the gaming industry has adapted and evolved in unprecedented ways. Prior to the internet, gaming was associated with board games like Monopoly and role-playing games such as Dungeons and Dragons.

When people did consider interactive games, they were likely thinking of the earliest 8-bit video game consoles, the must have items before the PlayStation launched in the 1990’s. It was during this period that internet enabled gaming started taking shape, but it wasn’t until the 2000’s that it fully exploded in popularity, this was when Stream was introduced.

In 2003, the digital store Steam is launched, allowing gamers to purchase new games online, while a year later, the massively popular multiplayer game World of Warcraft is released. With over ten million subscribers, it helped bring online gaming into the mainstream – and the industry has only gotten bigger from there.

Now, more than a billion people regularly play games online, either via consoles on their best television screens which provide the best experience or smartphone devices. The online gaming industry is worth a whopping $152 billion as of 2019. This is only expected to grow further, so here’s a glimpse at the future of online gaming.

The advancement of technology

One of the reasons for this major market shift is due to the rise in games available for smartphones. The shift began in 2007, with the industry putting more focus on it in 2009, when Apple announced the option for in-app purchase features for iPhone apps.

Statistics earlier this year showed that more than three billion people worldwide currently own smartphones, with gaming moving increasingly online to accommodate this. This was most evident back in 2016, with the unexpected popularity of augmented reality game Pokémon Go.

It may now be five years since that game broke records, but experts still believe that the gaming industry is heading in the direction of that cultural sensation. Instead of VR, it’s widely believed that augmented gaming is the natural evolution of gaming – and with the vast majority of people already owning smartphones, the shift is ready to be made.

However, the industry is still approaching a bigger problem. With more games vying for attention at the click of a button, the competitive marketplace means it’s now a lot harder than ever for companies to make money.

How the industry can attract the attention of gamers

Woman in Pink Long Sleeve Shirt Holding Silver Laptop Computer

For the multi-billion-dollar industry to keep prospering, it has to look towards another sector that is doing booming business: E-Sports and online casinos. These industries have risen in popularity due to the rise of smartphone apps, which aim to recreate the experience of being in a live betting shop or casino.

However, the central reason the number of users is growing at online gambling sites is due to a wealth of promotions designed to attract new players. For example, at 888poker you’ll find a free to play version, but with additional promotional incentives enticing you to play a higher stakes game.

The interactive aspect, and the cutting-edge graphics, make playing at 888poker feel very similar to visiting a casino itself. This promotional, “try before you buy” approach should become a standard for the wider gaming industry, not just the online gambling sector.

The idea of “free to play” games isn’t a new one. Gaming sensations such as Fortnite and Star Wars: The Old Republic are all considered “Freemium” games as they are all free to play – but bonus features come at an extra cost.

But to see how the industry can profit, you have to go back in time to the early days of “Shareware”. Here, developers would offer a free demo of the game, to entice the player into hopefully paying to finish it.

This method isn’t as popular as it used to be. In recent years, developers are more likely to offer free games filled with ads, with an ad free version only available to paying subscribers.

However, as the online casino industry shows, this approach clearly works at converting free players into paying subscribers. In a crowded marketplace, don’t rule out this method becoming commonplace once again.

The next generation of online gaming

Man Wearing White Virtual Reality Goggles

It looks like VR will be nothing more than a passing fad, due to the expensive nature of the technology, and the fact gamers want social interaction while playing. So, with that ruled out, where is the industry likely to go next?

Mixed reality games, the evolution from augmented reality sensations like Pokémon Go, seem to be the next big thing. Combining virtual and augmented reality technology, these games would be cutting edge – but crucially, would be available for mass market consumption when released on smartphones.

Experts are also predicting that artificial intelligence will play a major role in the future of gaming. And this isn’t just in the games themselves, but in the way they are developed and made.

It is believed that the technology can help reduce development time, with the possibility it may even be able to generate new content (i.e.: new levels) based on existing ones. This has the potential to be groundbreaking when it comes to keeping gamers invested in classic games.

Following the lead from live casino games could also see more interactive multi-player options get added to various online games. And then there are the developers themselves – could pre-existing social media companies start developing games of their own, to keep users on the site?

The possibilities for the next generation of gaming are endless. Just don’t expect the shift to VR that everybody is predicting – the revolution will be taking place on your phone.

How to create an activity trail for your school

Published

on

Want to transform your tired schoolyard into a play haven?

With the school holidays approaching, now is the perfect time to start looking at new school playground equipment and asking your pupils what apparatus they’d like to see, come September.

Whilst you could choose a challenging climbing frame with a slide to whizz down, more and more primary schools are opting for adventure trails. Perhaps you could do the same?

These trails can be tailored to suit your exact specifications and allow pupils to practice a broad range of skills. For example, Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) can develop low-level balancing and coordination skills whilst Key Stages 1 and 2 can challenge their physical and mental strength with climbing activities.

In this article, you can get some pointers on how to create a fun-filled activity trail for your school children.

Four factors to think about when designing an activity trail

  1. Space

Though trails can be linear in shape, they are great for joining irregular spaces in the playground. That means, if you have any unused spaces, you can transform them with exciting new school playground equipment.

How much available space you have can also determine what type of components your trail consists of, which leads us on to the next point.

  • Activities

From balancing beams and stepping logs to scrambling nets, rope bridges, monkey bars, climbing walls, and tunnels, you can make your activity trail as challenging as you like.

Of course, you want to encourage youngsters to set themselves targets – but you need to be realistic, so keep in mind their ages and abilities to ensure they can use the activity trail safely.

When investing in any new playground apparatus, you need to think carefully about how much you can afford to spend.

It’s worth arranging a meeting with the board of governors to explain your ideas and to explore your fundraising options. Alternatively, you may consider applying for a grant.

  • Safety surfacing

Although it’s perfectly possible to install an adventure trail directly onto grass, it’s advised that you opt for some type of safety surfacing – i.e. rubber mulch, synthetic grass, rubber bark, mats, or matting.

In doing so, you can relax knowing that your students can play safely in wet weather, without the play area becoming flooded or waterlogged.

Seek expert advice

By far the best thing you can do when investing in new play equipment for your school – be it a single unit or an activity trail – is to arrange a consultation with playground specialists, like Setter Play.

They have been designing, manufacturing and installing playground equipment for schools in Bedfordshire and the surrounding area for more than 20 years, and consider no job too big or too small.

During the consultation, you can share your initial ideas with their design team, and they will create a plan – taking into consideration you and your pupils’ requests. They can even offer tips and recommendations in this appointment to ensure that you create the most exciting activity trail for your students.

So, why not get in touch with them today?
